Modelling Types

The modelling industry is very versatile with a broad range of sectors within it, and over the past years we have seen an ever increasing demand for models.Once upon a time you could only ever image becoming a model and you were only considered if you were extremely tall, of a slim built and what was then considered to be extremely stunning looks. However now day’s models come in a variety of shapes, sizes and looks, this new trend has opened the door for a lot of ‘once dreamers’ bringing them closer to having their dream fulfilled as the industry requirements have changed dramatically.

UK Model Advice can help, aid and support you with the following types of modelling from the general industry requirements and inform you on what to expect and how you personally fit into the industry.

Fashion

This is the part of the industry where super-models are born and more emphasis is placed on the portfolio and physical features of a model where it is desirable for models with high cheek bones for females, square jaw line for males and a swan like neck.

This is generally broken down into two forms - Runway (live modeling commonly for high end fashion clothes designers) & Editoral (fashion magazines such as Vogue & Elle)

Commercial

You can usually refer to a commercial model as an “average good looking individual” that the general public can relate to. They are used to promote a variety of products and services.

This is generally broken down into three forms - Catalogue (modeling clothes & accessories), Print (magazines, newspapers, bilboards, posters/leaflets & buses) and Beauty (commonly showcasing makeup or face care products)

Plus size

Plus sizing modeling has grown in the industry over the past few years, this is more evident as it is more common to find well known brands selling clothes for a more curvy figure, examples include: Evans, Asos and Apple Bottoms. Commonly plus size models are around 10-12 UK dress size.

Fitness

Health and fitness has become more of an integral part of public consciousness, as a result there is an increase in the demand for fitness models. This type of modelling is generally broken down into two forms- Body building (modelling for Body building magazines & supplement products) and Athletic (usually modelling for general health & fitness related products or services)

Promotional

Promotional modelling can also be referred to as "Live" modelling where the models often interact with many people at once to maximize quantitative influence on consumer demand. This type of modeling is usually a great platform to build up the confidence to go on to other types of modeling like commercial.Promotional models usually work in groups. The work is so varied from handing out leaflets at a music festival to handing out canopies at a VIP celebrity party. Both instances allowing potential room for progression in other areas of the modeling industry.

Body Parts

Body part modeling can be apart of either the fashion side or commercial side of the industry. The most popular areas of body part modeling are  broken down into 2 forms- Hands & Feet (Generally selling shoes, nail polish or cream) Legs (Generally selling cream, tights or razors) Most of the work for body part modeling would be photographic or film based.

Teen

You will find generally agencies and clients that are taking on teen models want them to look their age as appose to looking older. A more natural fresh look is sought after within teen modeling with very little makeup applied.Due to the age group in this industry it is a must that at least one parent or guardian is always there to accompany the model to castings/auditions.

Children

Children modelling can generally start from new borns through to 13 year olds. This type of modelling is usually dependant on the following two things - the child’s personality and character around strangers. Generally you will find parents are encouraged to be on set as they are familiar faces for the child model and usually can get the smiles and laughter out of them with ease.
