Tips and Advice

If you have decided modelling is something you are passionate about pursuing, we have derived a few useful pointers in regards to how you should ideally portray yourself in the industry along with general things to be cautious of

Model personality

Whatever modeling category you fit into there is more to modelling then just striking a pose. Having the right personality and attributes are what will give you a competitive edge.

- Enjoy the photographic experience
Photographers usually look towards working with models that enjoy the photographic experience and want to participate in creative photography shoots which in return could give them repeat business with that particular photographer.

- Understand the hard work involved
Yes modeling can be great fun but it can also consist of working long hours and holding certain poses that you may not usually hold in your everyday life

- Projection of your character
You need to be able to portray personality and charisma on camera relevant to the brief you have been given. This is key as you need to be able to sell yourself to sell the product/service you are modeling

- Good self-esteem
The industry can be quite harsh so it’s always a plus when you can pick yourself up and get through those tough times as rejection is inevitable but you need to be able to not let that affect your main goal

- Passion
As with any career path you need to have the drive and passion to want to be the “next big thing” without this how can you expect to get very far.

- A self starter
We have all heard of the stories where the models like your Kate Moss were spotted and swooped up to go on to become super models, although this may happen you could be waiting a very long time to be discovered as the next big thing! You need to be proactive and if modeling is the avenue your interested in you need to start knocking on those doors.

- Be professional
Remember you are getting paid to do a job and you are representing yourself, having a professional approach and attitude on set will not only show you in a great light but can also increase your job opportunities.

Agency tips

Due to the fact the modelling industry is unregulated you need to be even more cautious of certain agencies and companies who claim they are here to help you.

We have derived a list of things to be cautious about:

- If the agency or modelling company does not have a physical address you can go to or valid contact numbers you can get hold of them on

- Make sure you do some research into the type of modelling industry you are suitable for and their requirements so you are not entering into this industry blindly

- Any aspiring model under the age of 18 should never be allowed to meet agencies or modelling companies unaccompanied by a parent or guardian

- You should not be required to pay joining fees or monthly/yearly subscription fees

- Nothing is guaranteed in this industry, be wary of companies guaranteeing you work.

- It doesn’t sound right if just by seeing one or two images of you an agency is prepared to sign you up without even meeting with you first. For all they know the images you have sent across may not even be you or could be taken a few years back.
